Politicians and statesmen abound at Evergreen. From city councilmen, to mayors, to state legislators, to U.S. Congressmen and a U.S. Senator, to a Tammany Hall styled political boss.

Leonard G. Dennis, a Union officer, remained in Florida after the civil war and became the nearly all powerful political boss of Alachua County for the decade of reconstruction.

When he wasn’t fighting a war, Jesse Johnson Finley, was all politician all the time. During his life he was Mayor of Memphis, a state senator in two states, a judge, a U.S. Congressman, and a U.S. Senator who never actually served.

Robert Wyche Davis was a 14 year old Confederate soldier turned lawyer who served four terms in Congress and near the end of his life was the Mayor of Gainesville.

George Kirkpatrick was a Florida State Senator best known for his support of the Rodman Reservoir but was also responsible for the Solid Waste Management Act that established recycling programs throughout Florida.
